New Interactive Charting Library in Pure Javascript

Highcharts JS is a charting library written in pure JavaScript, offering an easy way of adding interactive charts to your web site or web application. Highcharts JS currently supports line, spline, area, areaspline, column, bar, pie and scatter chart types.

It works in all modern browsers including the iPhone and Internet Explorer from version 6. Setting the Highcharts configuration options requires no special programming skills. The options are given in a JavaScript object notation structure, which is basically a set of keys and values connected by colons, separated by commas and grouped by curly brackets.

On hovering the chart, Highcharts JS can display a tooltip text with information on each point and series. By zooming in on a chart you can examine an especially interesting part of the data more closely. Zooming can be in the X or Y dimension, or both. Highcharts is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial 3.0 License.

Gründerinnen. "Ich bin perfektionistisch veranlagt" - Alexandra Podeanu von saftfabrik

Die deutsche Online-Gründerszene ist ein Männerverein. Auf Kongressen, Tagungen und sonstigen Branchenhöhepunkten sind Frauen die große Ausnahme. Aber es gibt sie! Jeden Mittwoch stellt deutsche-startups.de in der Reihe “Gründerinnen” eine interessante, wichtige oder erfolgreiche Web-Unternehmerin vor.

Das Bauchgefühl war ihr von Anfang an wichtig: Die begeisterte Saft-Trinkerin Alexandra Podeanu hat das Mixparadies saftfabrik (www.saftfabrik.de) gegründet und bei ihren Entscheidungen oftmals aus dem Bauch heraus gehandelt. “Was nicht heißt, dass ich nicht auch viel geplant und recherchiert hätte - ich bin ziemlich perfektionistisch veranlagt”, verrät die Berliner Unternehmerin. Diese Kombi war ihr seit jeher ein guter Berater. Die Entscheidung, nicht Psychologie sondern BWL zu studieren, hatte hingegen rationale Gründe: “Ich wusste, ich will in die Wirtschaft.” Nach dem Studium mit Schwerpunkt E-Commerce landete Podeanu zunächst bei Air Berlin, dann bei zanox und schließlich bei Spreadshirt, wo sie als Produktmanagerin arbeitete. Dann kam die Idee zu Saftfabrik: “Eine Kurzschlussentscheidung”. Das erste, was stand, war der Name. Podeanu ist überzeugt davon, dass erfolgreiche Gründungen aus den eigenen Bedürfnissen heraus entstehen. Ihre bisherige Erfahrung lautet: “Schauen was kommt, die Sache weiter verfolgen und vollen Einsatz zeigen. Der Rest kommt dann schon. Bloß nicht sitzen bleiben und verbissen auf die richtige Idee warten.” Nachdem die Idee stand, holte sie sich Mitgründerin Ana Druga und Programmierer Thomas Förster mit ins Boot. Im Januar 2008 ging es offiziell los.

Das Konzept von saftfabrik heißt Customized Food: Aus rund 30 Zutaten können Kunden ihren individuellen Saft mixen oder fertige Mischungen wählen. Eine halbe Literflasche “Beach Baby” kostet 5,50 Euro, innerhalb Berlins werden die Vitaminbomben sogar geliefert. Ansonsten kommen Versandkosten ab 3,90 Euro hinzu. Längst ist der Endkunde nicht mehr der einzige Geschäftspartner von saftfabrik: “Zweidrittel unseres Geschäftes läuft Business to Business.” Die Saftproduzentin beliefert nämlich auch gastronomische Betriebe und Firmen, die den Saftflaschen auf Wunsch hin ein Co-Branding verpassen können. Begeistert ist Podeanu vor allem davon, dass ihre Säfte schmecken wie die Zuhause: keine Konservierungsstoffe, keine Pastorisierung. Eine Tatsache, die den entscheidenden Unterschied zu verschiedenen Mitbewerbern ausmacht. Demnächst sollen entsprechend der Nachfrage auch Bio-Säfte und eine Kindersaftlinie den Saftmarkt bereichern.

“Frauen und Männer haben unterschiedliche Streitkulturen”

Der Schritt, inmitten der Krisen-Hochphase zu gründen, war schwierig aber nach anfänglicher Bauchentscheidung gut durchdacht. “Uns war klar, dass wir mit unserer Budgetplanung sehr vorsichtig vorgehen müssen. Wir haben uns für den Anfang keinen millionenschweren Investor ins Boot geholt.” Statt dessen halfen drei Business Angels mit verhältnismäßig kleineren Beträgen bei der Realisierung. Heute kann saftfabrik auf mittlerweile 1.200 Bestellungen von Endkunden zurückblicken, 50 Veranstaltungen hat das Team beliefert sowie 15 regelmäßige “Offline-Kunden”. Darauf ist sie stolz, denn ihr Vorhaben wurde zunächst von vielen Seiten belächelt. Im Nachhinein findet sie das nicht schlimm: “Wenn man als Frau unterschätzt wird, kann man durch Kompetenz überzeugen!” Gerne hätte sie noch etwas weibliche Verstärkung innerhalb der Entrepreneurszene. Sie kennt zwar einige Gründerinnen, diese sind aber fast ausnahmslos “One-Man-Unternehmen”, zum Beispiel selbständige Designerinnen. Podeanu ist jedoch überzeugt, dass sich das Verhältnis durch die Veränderungen im Gesellschaftsbewusstsein weiter ändern wird. Ihre Sorge ist eine andere: “Ich hoffe sehr, dass das Verhältnis nicht kippt!” Denn eine Ausgeglichenheit wäre doch sehr erstrebenswert. “Frauen und Männer haben unterschiedliche Streitkulturen und Herangehensweisen, um Probleme zu lösen. Darin sollten wir uns ergänzen.”

Zur Person
Alexandra Podeanu, Jahrgang 1978, studierte BWL an der Universität in Frankfurt am Main und an der Humboldt Universität in Berlin. Ihre Diplomarbeit beschäftigte sich mit dem Thema "Brand Strategy for Web Services Business Models". Nach dem Studium arbeitete sie unter anderem bei Air Berlin, Zanox und Spreadshirt. Ende 2008 kam Podeanu auf die Idee, frische Säfte herzustellen und diese über das Internet zu verkaufen. Anfang 2009 öffnete die Berliner Saftfabrik ihre Tore.

OrbiMed Invests in Manipal CRO Arm

OrbiMed, one of the largest healthcare focused private equity funds in the world, has invested in Bangalore-based clinical research organisation Ecron Acunova. This will be OrbiMed's first investment in India and will be made through Caduceus Asia Mauritius Ltd.

Ecron Acunova conducts clinical trials for pharmaceutical, biotech and medical device companies in Europe, Asia and the US. The company has earlier raised funding from IL&FS Investment Managers back in 2005.

Ecron Acunova, owned by Manipal Group, was formed after the merger between Manipal Acunova Ltd and Germany's Ecron GmBH. Dr. Sunny Sharma, a Senior Managing Director of OrbiMed Advisors India, has joined the board of Manipal Acunova Limited.

"We have built a solid reputation as a CRO in Europe and India. We are expanding our geographic offering and strengthening our depth and scale in functional outsourcing," said, D A Prasanna, CEO and Founder of Ecron Acunova. SBI Capital Markets was the exclusive financial advisor for the transaction.

OrbiMed has more than $5 billion under management and is headquartered in New York. It opened its Asia office in 2007, with main focus being India and Greater China. The PE firm has an office in Mumbai and received its foreign venture capital investor (FCVI) registration only earlier this year.

Craigslist Blocks Yahoo Pipes After Dev Shows Craig His New Mashup

Developers take note: if you’ve got a mashup built off of Craigslist’s data, don’t even think about showing it to anyone who works there. At least, that’s the lesson learned by developer Romy Maxwell, who says that Craigslist has blocked both his mashup and every single project built on Yahoo Pipes a few days after a friendly Email exchange he had with Craigslist founder Craig Newmark.

Maxwell is one of the developers behind a new mashup called Flippity, which lets you plot Craigslist listings on a map. In a blog post, Maxwell writes that he had been having an Email exchange with Newmark over the last few weeks, during which Maxwell asked if the techniques employed by his project would be acceptable under Craigslist’s restrictive Terms of Use.

Newmark replied that “as a rule of thumb, [it's] okay to use RSS feeds for noncommercial purposes.” Since the project used RSS feeds and was non-commercial, that seemed to indicate that the project would be OK. Maxwell followed up by asking if he was allowed to ask for donations on the site, which Newmark said he would look into. A couple weeks later, Maxwell sent Newmark a link to a working alpha version of Flippity. Newmark went silent, Craigslist pulled the plug on Flippity and every other Yahoo Pipes project soon thereafter. From Maxwell’s blog:

I couldn’t believe my eyes when I saw what Craigslist had done. They literally added a check for “pipes.yahoo.com” in the referrer header of any HTTP request, which was then redirected to the home page. In essence, they blocked them. Really, Craig ? This is your response ?

To be clear, Maxwell says that his post isn’t meant to be an attack on Newmark himself. Newmark actually CC’d a customer service representative on a couple of messages during the exchange, so it’s possible that they were the ones who ultimately decided to shut down Flippity and all of Yahoo Pipes.

Maxwell writes in his blog that he and another developer have been building the mashup for 2 months. The goal was to build something that would plot Craigslist listings on a map, offering an easy way to see what goods are being sold in your proximity. There’s already a great mashup called PadMapper that does this for housing, but Flippity was supposed to work for any Craigslist listing. For details on how the mashup worked, check out this post.

Of course, this isn’t really anything new for Craigslist. The site has previously shut down mashups using its data many times before. But they have permitted some sites, like Housingmaps, to tap into Craigslist data for years. And it seems strange that they would ban all Yahoo Pipes apps in response to this.

Maxwell says that this doesn’t mark the end of Flippity: the site will adapt to use another source of data, like eBay or Oodle.

New Twitter AR App Powered by Geotagging API

Some six months ago, we had a small conniption over an augmented reality application for Twitter on the iPhone.

With the release of Twitter's geotagging API, however, users were bound to see more and better AR apps for the popular microblogging service. Twitter 360 has just come up on our radar, and it looks like a dream from the outset. But will its features live up to user expectations?

Sadly, Apple wouldn't allow the app in the App Store and would only work on a jailbroken 3GS.

How, then, does this new hotness compare?

First, it's not a full-featured Twitter client. The team plans to add more features as time goes by, but with so little time between the official geotagging API's announcement and this application's debut, we're clearly looking at a case of "launch early, launch often."

On startup, the app updates a user's location automatically, and it also allows for an "invisible mode" during which the user isn't discoverable through digital means.

For users who have enabled the geotagging feature in Twitter, the app annotates tweets with location information. That users' friends can then see, via augmented reality, the location from where that user's last tweet was posted.

The Latest Tweets mode shows the latest tweets of followed users and the location from where they were posted. When a tweet is selected, the users sees a blue arrow indicating the direction and distance to the location from where the tweet was posted.

In Locate my Friends mode users can find their friends, again with a blue arrow showing the distance and direction to a friend's location.

Currently, the app is available on 3GS devices only. And yes: It's made it to the App Store.
